Student Loan Alternatives
Foregoing a student loan may not be an option for many; secondary education is very expensive and most people
have a hard time just making ends meet much less can they find room in the budget for college. Some parents save
for their child's education but this too is difficult for many especially in larger families when there are many
children for which they must provide. And of course the price of education is always going up just like everything
else, so even the savviest and most frugal of parents may need to consider a student loan!
The federal government of the United States has many programs in place for the college-bound and a student loan
from the federal government is usually offered at an interest rate much cheaper than any other source. But no
matter how afford this type of lending might be, a wise student and parent would do well to consider alternatives
to any type of student loan in order to cut costs as much as possible.
A scholarship is typically the first thing that comes to mind when talking about a way to get to college without
incurring debt. Usually scholarships are reserved for outstanding students who show above average academic
performance or athletic skills. However there are many scholarships available to students from all types of
situations; researching and apply for them is no more difficult than applying for a student loan, so of course they
should be researched. Many websites now allow you to create an account and then give some information about your
situation so that they can research scholarship opportunities for you.
A grant is another alternative to a costly student loan. A grant is like free money for college but typically
not as generous as a scholarship. Grants are dictated by those who set them up and may be very particular such as
being reserved for women, minorities, those studying a particular field, and so on. While a grant is also typically
very modest for many students it can still reduce the amount of a student loan that is necessary and so can save
you money in the long run.
It might take some time to research the different scholarships and grants available and of course there is an
application process for these programs to which you must adhere, but even if it's a few thousand dollars you're
awarded that means a smaller student loan. Considering that you typically pay interest charges and other fees on
any type of loan you get, and a student loan is certainly no different, this can mean even more savings for you. So
if you're college-bound or are just starting to research what might be required of you to get your secondary
education, you would do well to start with scholarships and grants. They may be modest and you may need additional
financial aid, but they can certainly help make your dreams of going back to school a reality!
